Point Loma (92106)
First discovered by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo while sailing for Spain in 1542, Point Loma is an historical part of San Diego. The peninsula is a prime location to watch the 15,000 California gray whales migrating south between the months of December and March. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park surrounds the point's secluded coves, and Point Loma features the Cabrillo National Monument and the Old Loma Lighthouse. The community of 64,000 offers wonderful views of downtown San Diego, Shelter Island, Coronado, and Harbor Island. The San Diego Yacht Club (www.sdyc.org), along Point Loma's La Playa shores, has held title to the "America's Cup" yachting trophy, dates back to 1886 and is legendary in United States yachting history.
Favourite neighborhoods are La Playa, Wooded Area and Fleetridge. Great restaurants include: Brigantine Shelter Island, Humphrey's By The Bay, Bali Hai, Old Venice and The Venetian. Humphrey's also offers a great concert series from Spring to Fall in a Polynesian outdoor setting on Shelter Island, which lures many great jazz, rock, pop, country acts and comedians like Dana Carvey, Bill Maher, and Bill Cosby every year. It is a shared property of the Half Moon Inn and one of San Diego's best outdoor concert settings. Shelter Island is home several other hotels and has the only mega yacht anchorage outside of San Diego Harbor at the Kona Kai Club and Resort at its west end.
Ocean Beach (92107)
This small community of 25,000 is located a few miles from downtown San Diego; but is composed of surfers, families, and residents whose views of life have a much more casual feel. There is great pride surrounding living in Ocean Beach, or "OB", as the locals call it. "Newport Avenue" is the main attraction of this seaside community, filled with locally owned stores, eateries, and bars. Dog Beach is a popular place to take your pets and the Ocean Beach Pier is a prime place to fish.
Sunset Cliffs on the southern side of community affords some phenomenal sunsets from view homes lining up the hill above some world class surfing reefs from the residential district south to Point Loma Nazarene University. Hoedad's in downtown Ocean Beach has one of San Diego's best burgers. Great sandwiches are found at the Olive Tree Market at Narragansett and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
